What was the brief?
The brief was to design a large family home which captures the magnificent harbour views from as many rooms as possible. The strong visual idea of a series of stacked camera boxes, with some cantilevered, captures the different angles that the panoramic views provide.
How was the house planned for this sloped property?
The design of this home was carefully positioned on the property to best utilise the usable area. Hence the house ‘hunkers down’ into the rear of the property - allowing the upper neighbours their precious views, while the front of the house projects outwards with open arms to the magnificent views. The selection of materials to clad the house emphasises the box effect and considers access and low maintenance for the future.
What interior works were designed?
We assisted in the interior architecture of the stairwell, treads and balustrades, fireplace design and internal concrete windows.
The entry stairwell continues the shuttered look concrete wall to the inside, with American oak stair treads lit with subtle tread lights and glass balustrades.
Was there anything different around the construction?
The owner/commercial builder was keen to build their home in a commercial manner but with applied residential aesthetics. The two main ‘view boxes’ are clad in concrete fair-faced tilt-panels, which is further reflected into the house through the main axis: the entry stairwell with the concrete shuttered effect.
The construction of the house comprises of concrete tilt-panels, concrete floors, steel posts and beams, and light timber framing.
